"My Host Mother" by Shie YASUE

When I read the letter from my host family, I was so surprised to see the family photo. My host mother uses a wheelchair. I've never spent time with people use it, so I was afraid I can't help her. When we met for the very first time, I just smiled to hide my anxiety.
The first a few days, I was not sure what and how I could do for her. When we went out, she drove her car. It was amazing. I tried to close the door for her, but she smiled and said "I can do it. Don't worry". Actually she could do most of things by herself and took care of ten horses at house. I regret my attitude toward her. I thought she was weak and I had to help her, but it's totally different.
One day we went to the equestrian contest she joined. She rode a horse very well although the lower part of her body didn't move. I can't believe it. She is so cool and shiny. Her friend told me she was a jockey and fell off a horse so she used a wheelchair. I just wonder what I can do if I had a same experience as her. I might lose hope for the future. My host mother is different. She challenged many things and made efforts. I know she practices to walk every day.
From the day I saw her performance with her hoers, I just helped her as same as I did it for my mother in Japan. I didn't treat her as a week person any more. Then she asked me a favor just as a family member. I felt I was accepted as a real family and really happy with that.
In Japanese we use the word "the handicapped" for someone who has disabilities. In English it is said "a person (living) with disability". I think English word much more focuses on a person. The days spent with my host mother taught me a lesson. I can't judge a person with a disability as weak. She is strong and still loves her horses and says "horse is my life". I hope our society doesn't create the person who is in weak position. No barrier exists among people. We live in the same world.
